Purpose:

The Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program (STLRP) was established in 2003 to increase access to healthcare and promote the retention of primary care physicians in medically underserved areas (MUAs) of California who provide direct patient care.

Description:

The Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program (STLRP) makes awards to eligible applicants currently licensed and practicing as a physician for loan repayment of up to $105,000 in exchange for a 36-month service obligation practicing and providing direct patient care in an eligible geographic or approved site designation. 

 

 

 

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible Applicants:

  • Individual

Must possess a valid and unrestricted MD/DO licensed to practice in CA, be in good standing with the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, not have any existing service obligations, not be in breach of any other health professional service obligation, have completed a 3-year residency, have unpaid educational loans, provide 32 hours or more per week of direct patient care.

 

 

 

Eligible Geographies:

For a facility to qualify, it must be in an eligible geographic or site designations.

Funding Source Notes:

The Steven M. Thompson Physician Corps Loan Repayment Program is funded through a $25 surcharge for the renewal of allopathic physician licenses in California. 

The manner in which the grant funding will be delivered to the awardee. Funding methods include reimbursements (where the recipient spends out-of-pocket and is reimbursed by the grantor) and advances (where the recipient spends received grant funds directly).

Funding Method Notes:

The STLRP awardees receive three annual payments during their 36-month service obligation. The first payment is issued to the awardee upon completing the first year of their service obligation.  The second payment is issued upon the completion of the second year of their service obligation.  The third and final payment is issued upon completing the service obligation.
