Purpose:

The LSTA-funded Sustainable California Libraries themed grant provides libraries the opportunity to design programming and educational opportunities focused on sustainability and climate resilience, by collaborating with project partners, community connections, and community members.

Description:

Projects receiving funding for the California Sustainable Libraries Award focus on climate education, environment-focused civic engagement, water conservation, air quality, energy efficiency, reducing waste, and supporting local climate action and resilience plans. Grants support activities such as workshops, teaching gardens, lending libraries including tools, seeds and other items tailored to community needs, climate-focused service groups, sustainability conversations, and more.

These projects meet Goal 4 of the California Library Services and Technology Act Investment Plan 2023–2027: Strengthen equitable resource-sharing and access to information, services, and opportunity with an emphasis on local community strengths and challenges.

Each project should demonstrate an understanding of community needs, aspirations, and assets. Public programming, outreach, and at least one project partner or community connection is required for the Sustainable California Libraries grant.

Matching Funding Requirement:

Applicants are expected to contribute a local match to the grant funds in the form of a cash match and/or in-kind contributions. A match is expected, but no minimum amount is required.

Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grants are federally funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and are awarded by the State Library to eligible California libraries.

Funding Method Notes:

For awards totaling less than $20,000, payment is made in full.

For awards totaling more than $20,000, payments typically follow a 45%/45%/10% payment schedule.

It can take up to eight weeks for a grantee to receive funds from the State Library after a signed, error-free claim form is received by the State Library’s Fiscal Office.
